Instagram has added ads to Reels, which means more ads on Instagram!!!!
Instagram has launched Reels ads today after testing it in select countries. As the company explains, Instagram Reels is the best place to reach people who do not follow you.
So, this is good news for small businesses and brands that do not have a large following as they can still grab eyeballs. Ads on Reels will allow both brands and creators to be discovered by a much wider audience than the limited number they can cater to via stories and posts.
The Reels ads will also follow the same format of being showcased in full screen and vertically, like all Reels’ content. These ads will appear like ads in Stories, in between individual Reels. Like with the regular Reels content, these ads will loop and can be up to 30 seconds long. People can also comment on, like, view, save and share these Reels ads.
The Reels ads will appear in the most popular places to access Reels content, which includes the Reels tab, Reels in Stories, Reels in Explore, and Reels in your feed. Once you tap into a reel from Stories, Feed, the Reels Tab or Explore, you will enter a viewer that exclusively shows Reels and you can keep scrolling vertically.

Just like any other ad on Instagram, you are also going to be given control over the Reels ads you see. If you see an ad you don't like, you can skip the ad. Or you can also tap the menu on the post to hide or report it.
“We see Reels as a great way for people to discover new content on Instagram, and so ads are a natural fit. Brands of all sizes can take advantage of this new creative format in an environment where people are already being entertained,” said Justin Osofsky, Instagram Chief Operating Officer.
If you are on iOS 14.5 and up, and have app tracking turned on, Instagram (and Facebook) will not be able to track the content you see and send you related ads or on Stories, your feed, or on Reels. But that will not reduce the number of ads you see at any given time. If you are someone like us, who hates ads, we don't have a solution for you yet. But to be fair, Instagram ads are less abhorrent than the ads on Facebook, so you know, that's something.
