Twitter in Nigeria Suspended 'Indefinitely’ Over President Muhammadu Buhari's Deleted Tweet.
Twitter deleted Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari's tweet referring to the country’s civil war in a warning about the recent unrest in the southeast.
Information Minister Lai Mohammed said Friday that government officials took the step because the platform was being used "for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria's corporate existence"
Nigeria's government said Friday it was suspending Twitter indefinitely in Africa's most populous nation, a day after the company deleted a controversial tweet President Muhammadu Buhari made about a secessionist movement.
Twitter was still working in Africa's most populous country soon after Friday's statement, which triggered immediate criticism from rights groups and analysts about freedom of expression, and many said they would simply use VPNs to maintain access to the platform.
The announcement made by the Nigerian Government that they have suspended Twitter's operations in Nigeria is deeply concerning," the company said in a statement.
"We're investigating and will provide updates when we know more."
The ministry did not give details about what activities were threatening Nigeria.
